A few years ago we sat down with our friends, Reid Bryant and Brian Grossenbacher, with the goal of creating a book to give bird dog owners additional insight into the minds of the dogs they live with. It was our intention to share our experiences training dogs over the years and to provide people with detailed information about the training system that our family has devised after decades of training animals.
From picking and raising a puppy to following our step-by-step approach to dog training, our entire training system and philosophy is set out for you in this book!

You will find these collars on every dog in our kennel. Leather is smooth against a dog's neck and will not pull hair like a lot of nylon collars. This also helps the collar rotate around your dog's neck when you cue with a checkcord, thus maintaining a consistent point of contact. 21 inch leather collar used by the pros.
This is the only checkcord that we use when we are training dogs. It is constructed of 7/16 solid braid nylon rope this 20 foot check cord is stiff, making it easier to check cord your dog and less likely to chaff your hands. The hardware is solid Italian brass swivel snap. This rope is made specifically for our family.

This video will walk you through the first steps of formal training, the Foundation Level of Training. This is the hub of our entire training format and every thing in the training system is built up the skills taught at this training level. Topics covered during the Foundation include developing points of contact through the use of the Command Lead, Check Cord, and Whoa Post.
The Intermediate video covers the second stage of formal training. This video will show you how to use the foundation you have developed to transition all of your cues to low level cue of an e-collar without ever confusing your dog. At this stage you can begin to steady your dog on game, handle him in the field with remote cues, and heel off lead.

Our Command Lead or Wonder Lead is one of our core dog training tools and is synonymous with the Smith Training Method. This is a great way to teach your dog to listen to ever increasing light cues. The Command Lead is how we get dogs quickly and calmly heeling beside us on a loose lead. Developed by Delmar Smith, this lead is the first step to getting your dog to join up with you mentally and in tune with subtle cues.
